Air Movers and Dehumidifiers: How Drying Equipment Works After a Leak

After water is extracted from a Cedar Rapids home, the crew leaves behind a group of loud machines. They can feel like a lot, but each one has a job. Here is what they do, why they run around the clock, and how the crew knows when to take them away.
Air Movers
Air movers are low, snail-shaped fans that blow a fast sheet of air across floors and up walls. Moving air pulls moisture out of the surface of carpet, drywall and wood so it evaporates into the room. They are angled along walls and sometimes aimed into openings cut at the bottom of drywall to dry the wall cavity.
Dehumidifiers
Evaporated water has to go somewhere. Restoration dehumidifiers pull it out of the air and pump it to a drain. Without them, the room just gets humid and drying stalls. Most crews use low-grain refrigerant dehumidifiers, which keep working in drier air than household units.
Specialty Equipment
- Wall cavity drying systems push dry air through small holes into closed walls
- Hardwood floor mats draw moisture up through cupped wood floors (see wood floor cupping)
- Air scrubbers with HEPA filters clean the air where mold or dust is involved
- Heat drying in some cases, to speed up dense materials
How the Crew Knows It's Dry
Drying is measured, not guessed. On the first day, the crew takes readings from unaffected areas of the same materials to set a dry goal. Each visit, they record moisture in the wet drywall, wood and subfloor, plus the temperature and humidity in the room. When readings reach the goal, the equipment comes out. These logs also help with an insurance claim.
Cedar Rapids Basements Take Longer
Basements are cool, and concrete holds a lot of water. A finished basement after a sump pump failure or water heater leak often needs more drying time than an upstairs room. See how to dry a wet basement.
Living With the Equipment
- Keep doors and windows closed unless the crew says otherwise
- Leave the machines on and in place
- Keep children and pets away from cords and drain hoses
- Expect noise and warmth; both are normal
